Robotnik, trying to be his evil self, tries to rival sonic, when the hedgehog was happy to find a friend to stick around. They spended time together, and one day people just started assuming Sonic was Eggman's son, untill Robotnik actually pulled out adoption papers as if waiting for this question.

Also yes, Metal Sonic here is the equivalent of Companion Cube, and gets to see the surface with Sonic :)
