Akaashi would silently squeeze your hand as you walk around through the city, a reminder that he loves you without saying anything. You squeeze his hand back and he would be flustered on the inside, not noticable to others, but you are the only person that would notice it. Your hands are tingled together in his pocket of the jacket you wear.
how the great oikawa-san's visit to tokyo to meet kuroo-chan and bokuto went
akaashi in ch333 is so relatable & inspiring to me because despite feeling inadequate, he takes the time to get himself together to play the game to HIS best abilities. he stops trying to ask himself what tobio would do and instead plays the game HIS way. akaashi is a very great setter who is capable of getting his team as far as they can. it’s just so nice to see someone who goes down this “but they do it better” spiral & get themselves out of it all on their own. he didn’t need anyone to comfort him. akaashi sat on the bench, allowed himself to think his feelings through, and was able to stand on the court again. he was able to go about his task as a setter like normal. i really admire that.
Fukurodani is probably the most unique team in Haikyuu when it comes to the team leadership structure. Bokuto is captain with Akaashi as his vice-captain. However, the unusual part of this is that Akaashi is a second year vice-captain in a team with no shortage of third years. If you know anything about Japanese senpai/kouhai dynamics, you will see how unusual this is. Compared to another second year setter-leader Kenma, Akaashi is very formal with the third years and seems to be a stickler to the system of sports culture.
Another unique thing about Fukurodani is that their captain’s number is 4 instead of 1. It becomes clear that Bokuto who wears the traditional number for the ace functions more as the ace of the team, rather than their leader. The training camp arc further cements this idea with Coach Ukkai and Miyanoshita Eri, manager of Ubugawa, making comments on Fukurodani’s play style:
Fukurodani is a team that has learned to accommodate Bokuto's ups-and-downs. They have complete trust in Bokuto’s abilities and Bokuto has trust in Fukurodani to not lose without him.
They are strong enough without Bokuto,
but they want Bokuto to do well.
Akaashi even states in 244 that although Bokuto's concerns may seem comical to some, they are very important to Bokuto and, therefore, Akaashi takes them seriously as well.
Bokuto is their mood maker and is very reliable. If you look through the Fukurodani matches, he is always the one praising his teammates for good plays and many people have commented that Bokuto being on a roll inspires others to do better as well.
This is especially striking considering Bokuto’s experience with his middle school team, ch. 335, where Bokuto was seen as too much and as a result, he often worked alone. Fukurdani is so important to Bokuto because they represent unconditional love and support.
As revealed later on in the plot, Bokuto is aware of his shortcomings. He takes responsibility for them, but also acknowledges Fukurodani’s help. He appreciates their support so much and wants to repay their kindness.
However, Bokuto is not the only one that receives the endless support of Fukurodani. They are a cohesive team and there are many scenes where they display familiarity with each other’s patterns.
Akaashi's habit of overthinking is noticed by Saru, Kaori points out that Akaashi is considered odd, Bokuto steps up to show his trust in Akaashi even when he starts to crumble. The team is not surprised when Akaashi starts crying and lets Bokuto be the one to comfort him.
It shows the unconditional love and support Fukurodani has for all members of the team.
They are not overly concerned when a member does not play their best because they trust each other wholeheartedly.
It is significant that they are the only team who are introduced together in the timeskip. It introduces the idea that Fukurodani is still a unit. There are even parallel lines where:
Bokuto, ch. 392: “梟谷(みんな)!!普通になった俺を見てくれ!”
“Everyone!! Look at how normal I am now (how far I’ve come)!”
Akaashi (and implied Konoha, Komi, Saru), ch. 400: “世界!!梟谷(うち)のエースを見てくれ!”
“World!! Look at our ace!”
There is an interesting technique used here in the Japanese where the kanji says “Fukurodani” but the Furigana says “everyone” and “our.” The world “our” is also special because it is “うち” which is a word that derives from “home.” Bokuto belongs to Fukurodani and Fukurodani is narratively a family.
Fukurodani is introduced in Haikyuu when Karasuno is learning to grapple with Hinata's new-found desire to improve begins to destabilize the team dynamic. They show Karasuno that selfishness is okay with your team's support, leading to the honing of new weapons and Kageyama's reclaimation of his crown. They symbolize a different type of strength that Karasuno did not have yet. Although the roles they cultivated allowed for some stagnation and stress during the Mujinazaka match, they were able to overcome difficulties to become even stronger, falling just short of #1 in Japan. Still, their loss became more of a reason to pursue their goals and although not all of them play volleyball anymore, they come together across Japan to support each other.

Being a manager for Fukurodani Academy’s boys’ volleyball team was a bit like being the conductor of an orchestra that had no intention of following the sheet music. Between Bokuto’s mood swings, Konoha’s snark, and the constant low hum of chaos that seemed to follow Komi like a shadow, your days were never dull.
But somehow, it worked.
Maybe it was Akaashi’s unshakeable calm, or Washio’s quiet reliability. Maybe it was the way Sarukui knew when to reel Bokuto back with just a look, or how the other two managers—Yukie and Kaori—had learned to tag-team any brewing disaster before it hit critical mass. The team was loud, ridiculous, occasionally impossible, and you wouldn’t trade them for anything.
You’d been with them long enough now that their habits were second nature. You knew who needed water before they asked, who always forgot their kneepads, who preferred warm-ups in silence and who needed to scream themselves into the zone. You’d taped ankles, refereed arguments, restocked first-aid kits, and once used a mop handle to redirect a rogue serve mid-flight.
So naturally, the one time you stepped out of the gym to speak with a teacher, chaos found its way in without you.
The package arrived during warmups. A small cardboard box, scuffed at the corners, with your name written neatly on the top in permanent marker. No return address. No label.
Kaori found it by the entrance and placed it on the bench, assuming you’d handle it when you got back.
But Bokuto saw it.
He was mid-warmup, mid-laugh even, when something square and cardboard caught his eye from across the gym. Like a hawk sighting prey, his eyes zeroed in and he made a beeline for the bench.
Before anyone could react, he was already crouching in front of the package, fingers hovering over the taped seam.
“Bokuto-san, don’t—”
Smack.
Kaori’s hand came down on his faster than lightning, swatting his fingers away just before he could peel back the flap.
Bokuto yelped, more offended at being stopped than anything else, still pointing dramatically at the box like it had personally challenged him to a duel. He cradled his hand with exaggerated care, rubbing it as if he'd just been grievously injured. "Oww, what was that for?" he whined, lower lip jutting out.
“It’s not yours,” Yukie said immediately, sliding in front of it like a bodyguard.
“Aw c'mon!” Bokuto cried, jogging over. “What if it’s important?! Or fragile?! Or snack-related?! I mean—it was sent to a manager, so it’s stuff for us, right?!”
“Then she’ll open it when she gets back,” Konoha muttered, clearly unimpressed.
“But what if she wants us to open it for her?”
“She doesn’t,” Kaori said flatly.
“You don’t know that!”
“You don’t know that she does,” Akaashi chimed in, walking past with a towel draped over his shoulders. “And opening someone else’s package is literally a crime.”
Bokuto paused, scandalized. “Wait. Really?”
“Federal offense,” Akaashi confirmed, not even stopping.
“Yeah, that’s like... a serious thing,” Sarukui added.
Komi nodded enthusiastically. “You could totally get arrested.”
“Or banned from deliveries for life,” Konoha threw in with a shrug.
“I think that’s made up,” Washio said, but no one contradicted him.
Bokuto groaned. “This system is broken.”
“I bet it’s mysterious,” Komi offered, grinning. “Like something cursed. Or magical. Or both.”
“It’s probably just more athletic tape,” Sarukui said.
“No, no, no,” Bokuto shook his head. “It could be owls.”
“Why would someone send owls to the school gym?” Washio asked.
“Why wouldn’t they?” Bokuto countered.
The entire team was crowded around the bench now, forming a semicircle of ridiculous anticipation. The box sat there, untouched, radiating unearned power.
Kaori had her arms crossed. “No one’s opening it.”
Yukie nodded. “Not unless you want to explain to Coach why you’re committing petty theft.”
“And a federal offense,” Akaashi added as he passed.
Yukie groaned. “Right. And a federal offense.”
Just then, the gym doors opened.
You stepped in, unaware of the tension until twelve pairs of eyes swiveled to you at once.
“What did I miss?” you asked slowly, eyebrows raised.
Everyone pointed.
“Box,” Bokuto said gravely.
“Highly suspicious,” Komi added.
Akaashi sighed. “Please tell them it’s not cursed.”
You blinked at the package. “Oh. That’s just the kneepads my uncle donated.”
Silence.
Bokuto looked devastated. “It’s what?”
“Kneepads.” You opened the box casually, pulling out a neat stack of new gear. “He runs a sports supply store. Said he had extras.”
“You’re telling me,” Bokuto said slowly, “I waited fifteen minutes to NOT see a magical owl?”
“Yes?” you replied, mildly confused.
“…I mean, that’s cool too, I guess,” he muttered, thinking about it for a second. Then, as if deciding he could live with the outcome, he gave a small nod, still pouting a little. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay with this.”
Washio nodded. “I like kneepads.”
You grinned. “Good. Because there’s enough for all of you.”
One by one, you handed the kneepads out, and the team eagerly grabbed their pairs, excitedly comparing colors and sizes before jogging off to try them on over their uniforms. Bokuto was already halfway across the gym, yelling something about testing them with a jump serve.
You turned to find Yukie and Kaori standing off to the side, arms crossed.
“So,” you said, raising an eyebrow, “they were debating what was in the box, and the majority vote was a magical owl?”
Kaori rubbed her face with both hands. “Don’t even ask.”
You had worked your ass off for this promotion.
Late nights, impossible deadlines, last-minute rewrites—you’d done it all. You had sacrificed weekends, spent too many nights hunched over your desk, and powered through mind-numbing meetings, all in the hopes that your work would finally be recognized. And now, with the senior editor position finally up for grabs, it was down to you and Akaashi Keiji.
Akaashi—the picture-perfect editor. Calm, meticulous, frustratingly good at everything. The kind of guy who never looked frazzled, never rushed, never flinched under pressure. It was like stress simply did not affect him.
And somehow, despite working just as hard as you, he always seemed one step ahead.
You wanted to win this. Not just for the raise or the title, but to finally beat him at something. To prove that you were just as good—better, even.
So when your boss called you both into the office, hands folded with a pleased smirk, you thought, Maybe, just maybe, I’ve got this.
Then the words left their mouth.
“Akaashi landed an exclusive with the MSBY Jackals.”
Your stomach dropped.
“What?”
Your boss nodded. “Full-length feature. First-hand accounts. Exclusive team coverage. Bokuto introduced him to the players himself—an incredible opportunity. The kind of coverage that puts our magazine on the map.”
You snapped your head toward Akaashi, who sat calmly beside you, hands folded neatly, expression unreadable.
That smug bastard.
This was his play? Getting his old volleyball captain to pull strings for him?
Your blood boiled.
“Oh, come on,” you said, barely keeping the irritation out of your voice. “That’s not exactly fair.”
Akaashi finally turned to you, blinking in that cool, composed way that made you want to shake him. “How so?”
You scoffed. “You used connections to land the interview. It wasn’t based on merit.”
Akaashi tilted his head, looking entirely unbothered. “I leveraged resources available to me. That’s part of the job, isn’t it?”
Your jaw clenched.
The worst part? He wasn’t wrong.
Your boss leaned back in their chair, watching the exchange with thinly veiled amusement before raising a hand to cut off the argument. “Enough. If you both want this promotion, you’re both going to prove you deserve it.”
You blinked. “What?”
Akaashi didn’t react, but you saw the faintest flicker of curiosity in his sharp blue eyes.
“You’re both going to work on the feature together,” the boss continued, tapping a finger against their desk. “I want the best piece possible. If you can’t put aside your rivalry long enough to get this done, neither of you will get the promotion. Understood?”
Your fingers tightened around your notepad. This was not what you wanted. The whole point was to beat him, not work with him.
But you couldn’t back down now. Not when the stakes were this high.
“…Understood,” you muttered through gritted teeth.
Akaashi nodded smoothly. “Understood.”
“Good.” Your boss glanced at the clock. “Get started. I expect a solid first draft by the end of the week. And with the deadline, I imagine you’ll be staying late to work on it together.”
You bit back a sigh, already feeling the impending headache.
The moment the meeting ended, you stormed past Akaashi, but before you could make it out the door, his voice followed, low and amused.
“Try not to let your frustration get in the way of our work,” he said smoothly, adjusting his glasses. “It’d be a shame if I had to carry you through this project.”
You turned on your heel, eyes narrowed. “Oh, don’t worry, Akaashi. If anyone’s carrying this project, it’ll be me.”
His lips twitched, just slightly. “I look forward to seeing that.”
You hated how much fun he was having.
But most of all?
You hated that he always found a way to stay one step ahead.
The office was silent, save for the rhythmic tapping of keyboards and the occasional irritated sigh escaping your lips.
You had been here for hours, stuck in the same damn room with Akaashi, going back and forth on revisions, disagreeing on everything.
“That transition is too abrupt,” Akaashi said, his tone calm as he skimmed over your section. “It needs more context.”
“It’s concise,” you shot back, stretching in your chair. “We don’t need extra fluff.”
He exhaled softly, as if reigning in patience. “It’s not fluff. It’s clarity.”
You groaned, leaning back. “You’re impossible.”
Akaashi didn’t look up from his screen. “And yet, you’re still here.”
You wanted to throw something at him.
After another hour of back-and-forth edits, your eyes started to sting from staring at the screen for too long. You rubbed at them, sighing deeply as you slumped in your chair.
“This is ridiculous,” you muttered. “We’re never going to finish at this rate.”
Akaashi glanced at the clock. “Then we should stop arguing and be efficient.”
You shot him a glare. “Oh, so now you’re suddenly a team player?”
His lips quirked. “I always was. You just refuse to acknowledge it.”
You groaned again, running a hand through your hair. This was going to be a long night.
Akaashi sighed, leaning back in his chair as well, adjusting his glasses. “We’re making progress. Whether you want to admit it or not.”
You didn’t want to admit it, but he was right. The article was shaping up, the writing crisp, the interviews well-structured. And despite your deep frustration, working with Akaashi wasn’t as horrible as you wanted it to be.
Still, you weren’t going to let him think he had the upper hand.
“We’ll see,” you muttered, turning back to your screen.
Akaashi hummed, watching you for a moment before returning to his own work.
The night stretched on, both of you determined to outdo the other, neither of you willing to be the first to give in.
And just like that, the rivalry continued.
Until Akaashi broke the silence.
"I have extra tickets to the MSBY game this weekend. You should come."
Your fingers froze over your keyboard. Slowly, you turned your head to look at him, brows furrowed in confusion. "What?"
Akaashi didn’t even glance up, still focused on his screen as if he hadn’t just said something completely out of character. "The game. It would be beneficial to see the team in action if we’re writing about them."
You narrowed your eyes. "You could just send me the game footage."
His fingers tapped lightly against his desk before he finally looked at you, gaze unreadable. "That’s not the same."
You leaned back in your chair, arms crossed. "Why are you being nice to me?"
"I’m not. I’m being practical."
You scoffed. "Uh-huh. Sure."
Akaashi tilted his head slightly, amusement flickering in his eyes. "You don’t have to come. I just thought you’d appreciate an exclusive firsthand look. But if you’d rather rely on secondhand reports, be my guest."
Your jaw tightened. You hated how effortlessly he manipulated situations in his favor.
"Fine. I’ll go."
Akaashi nodded, returning to his work as if nothing had happened. "Good. I’ll send you the details."
You stared at him for a second longer before shaking your head, muttering under your breath.
This was getting too weird.
Hello ladies and gents and welcome to my dumb brain struggling to actually step out of my comfort zone here and write characters I usually don’t write so forgive the possible cringe u.u’’
Furthermore I am a moron who is unable to use a calendar and I confused the dates of DaiSuga Week with the ones for this event, so these come a bit late and will be continued irregularly, but here is a masterpost for my contributions to the @spikersetterweek!
More info on each day below the cut - the stories are generally rated Gen, though some might drift a bit in the direction of Teen And Up - no Mature or Explicit content though! // PLEASE NOTE: As of posting this blog, I have not yet written all the chapters, so the contents are still subject to change!
Day 1 - Struggle - Daichi/Suga They practise for weeks and yet their new synchronized attack just won't work. Sugawara is starting to doubt and works himself to the bone in order to figure out what he is missing.
Day 2 - Swap - Watari & Aoba Johsai Shinji Watari is not a bad setter, but he is no Oikawa Tooru either and in the shadow of a great name and a new friendship the Aoba Johsai first-year has to reflect on his pupose in a new team.
Day 3 - Separation - Hanamaki & Oikawa Hanamaki isn't sure if he believes in fated pairs, but what he definitely believes in is proofing people wrong and rubbing it in their faces afterwards - coincidently so does Oikawa and when they are accused of being useless when separated from Iwaizumi and Matsukawa, they set out to have the most epic day ever... all on their own!
Day 4 - Space - Bokuto/Akaashi (+ Kuro/Kenma) The year is 2168 and humanity has colonized the solar system. Space travel is available for the broad population and a new sport is gaining in popularity: Saturn Surfing. Akaashi Keiji isn’t really into any of this, but a job is a job and so he has to set out in order to sell a new and promising surfer some sponsorship deals - if only he knew that ‘rising star with wild boyish charm’ translates to ‘Bokuto Koutaru’, he would have taken more Ibuprofen on the trip!
Day 5 - Sacrifice - Shirabu & Ushijima (+ Semi & Tendou) Shirabu chose Shiratorizawa for a reason - even the simplest set will lead to victory! And while he was definitly right with that, he still has to discover that relying on an invicible ace does not mean he has to sacrifice his pride as a skilled setter.
Day 6 - Surprise - Koganegawa & Futakuchi (+ Dateko) All Koganegawa wants is for someone to be proud of him. Especially his captain! If only he could figure out how to earn Futakuchi's friendship.
Day 7 - Free Day - Honestly, I have no idea yet
More redraw, this time an old Haikyuu Icon I made because THE HYPE IS STILL FREAKING REAL!
(also I think I am doing redraws wrong -.-’’)
Btw the background is free to use, as long as you don’t remove my link at the bottom (and preferably credit me with an actual link should you use it) - You can find it here
*sleep deprived & drops more design stuff* *proceeds to bang head against wall* Yeah so as you can see I had a hard throwback to sweet, sweet childhood days when I loved to design maps for fantasy worlds (or create my own Pokemon regions, like seriously, I have an entire binder full of them)

More Info below the cut:
Miyagi: - The Miyagi continent is rather small and connected by land to the larger continents of Oita and Tokyo - It is dominated by three countries: Shiratorizawa, Aoba Johsai and Dateko - Lately, Karasuno and Wakunan have been widening their influence while Johzenji is withdrawing from continental politics under their new leadership - Miyagi has been a stable continent for centuries, due to Shiratorizawa's dominance and has therefore accumulated considerable wealth - Magic and the arcane have long left this continent, and except for myths and legends, have been mainly forgotten - The continent consists of kingdoms and smaller, independent dukedoms and principalities that do not have kings but are also not under the direct influence of one (typically lead by nobles of other status or councils of merchants as in Senseki and Kakugawa)
More specific headcanons here (1 // 2 // 3 // 4) Tokyo: - The Tokyo continent is not very large on a global scale but has an enormous density of kingdoms - That and many wars over territory as well as constant clashes with its supernatural inhabitants have lead to the forming of a hand full of Alliances and Political Unions, the most influential being the Fukurodani Alliance and the Kingdom of Itachiyama with its subsidiaries - Ever since the establishments of these Unions, the continent has settled and the dispute has shifted from physical wars to diplomatic clashes - While handled differently from kingdom to kingdom, there are overall two coexisting governments - the human and the fae - living in cooperation More specific headcanons here

It’s Tokyo time <.<

-> Batch 1: Aoba Johsai & Karasuno -> Batch 2: Shiratorizawa & Dateko
More info below the cut:
Nekoma: - "We are the Blood - Connect, Flow & Flourish" - Two cats, third eye and jewel on red, white and black ground - Main Export: Fish, Agricultural Products, Jewelry - Struggling country on the Tokyo continent, although since joining the Fukurodani Alliance they have been steadily expanding and gaining in influence - not much is known about the country and its traditions - Nekoma has, as most nations in Tokyo a deep rooting connection to the arcane, but no specific religion - the most commonly recognized deity is the three eyes Goddess, who allegedly founded the royal family during the First Age, her creed is focussing on honesty and reliability
Fukurodani: - “Focus of the Mind and Heart” - Owl, crown and crossed swords on gold, black and white ground - Main Export: Crops, Wood, low-grade Ore (mostly zink, bronze and copper) - Central power of the Fukurodani Alliance and competitor for the most influential country own the Tokyo continent - Great military strength - Fukurodani too is very closely connected to the inhuman and supernatural, although they take a more political and less religious approach to interacting with the arcane - there are many pockets actively worshipping specific temples, the largest being the Church of Three Suns but even it is not influential or important enough to be considered having a large impact
Have a better quality version and the option to download it here: Nekoma & Fukurodani
Okay so, so far those are all - I have more ideas (specifically for Wakunan and Johzenji) but none of them will play a significant role in my continuation and are more minor mentions so idk if I’ll draw them too. (Let me know tough if you want to see them or any other teams/kingdoms - if you do I will probably do them)
