I know what a straight stitch is but am I doubling back? Am I wrapping the thread around?

btw embroidery i just wanna know Straight stitch Whipped running stitch Is an option I've seen which would explain the dotted line but Neither seem right Functionally it makes no difference from what I can tell This is a kit from Hobbycraft It's only confusing because I'm not a complete beginner but it's being explained differently than I'm used to
